“With or without Asad? – The Turkish-Russian alliance is built on shaky ground” – a guest commentary by political scientist and EZIRE research assistant Hüseyin Çiçek in the Neue Zürcher Zeitung about the geopolitical interests of the Syrian Conflict and what the retreat of the US troops could change about the situation.

Of the three major external protagonists of the Syrian Conflict, Moscow, Ankara and Washington, the latter wanted to, as promised during the election campaign, retreat more or less completely from the region. Technically, the other two could profit from the move, Çiçek writes, but the geopolitical interests were too different for a Turkish-Russian alliance to prosper.
