The EZIRE maintains diverse cooperations with institutions of the Friedrich-Alexander University and universities in Germany and Europe.
Cooperations within the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg
Research Centre for Turkish Law
Professor Dr. Rohe, Director of EZIRE, also Director of the Centre for Turkish Law at the Law Faculty of the Friedrich-Alexander University. Managing Director is EZIRE-employee Dr. Ali Yarayan. The Research Centre for Turkish Law was established in November 2013.
Master’s Programme Middle Eastern Studies
The EZIRE participates in the teachings of the master’s programme Middle Eastern Studies. Dr. Jörn Thielmann, Managing Director of the EZIRE, coordinates the programme since the winter semester 2013/2014.
Department Islamic Religious Studies (DIRS)
The EZIRE participates in the new bachelor’s degree programme “Islamic Religious Studies”, which is part of the courses offered at the FAU since the winter semester 2012/2013. Furthermore, the EZIRE is involved since the winter semester 2015/2016 in the master’s programmes “Islamic Religious Studies” and “Media – Ethics – Religion” with focus on “Islam and media”. In addition, the EZIRE holds joint conferences with the DIRS.
Geography
The EZIRE conducts joint courses and research projects as well as the organization of scientific symposia with the Department of Geography, in particular with the Chair for Cultural Geography and Orient Research under Prof. Dr. Georg Glasze.
Political Science
The Volkswagen Foundation supports the project “The Struggle over Identity, Morality and Public Space in Middle Eastern Cities” (duration 2015-2018), which was developed by the EZIRE in cooperation with the Chair of Contemporary History/Political Science of the Near and Middle East (Prof. Dr. Schumann †) and the Department of Geography.
Arabistics and Semitistics, Oriental Philology and Islamic Studies, and History and Theology of Eastern Christianity
The Bavarian Orient Colloquium and other joint events are organized with the chairs of Arabistics and Semitistics, Oriental Philology and Islamic Studies, and History and Theology of Eastern Christianity.
Central Institute for Area Studies
The EZIRE participates actively in the section “Middle East” of the Central Institute for Area Studies. Dr. Jörn Thielmann, Managing Director of the EZIRE, was elected in the summer semester 2015 as the speaker for the section “Middle East”.
Central Institute Anthropology of Religions
The EZIRE cooperates with the Central Institute Anthropology of Religions (ZAR), including organizing and conducting conferences. The Director of the EZIRE, Prof. Dr. Mathias Rohe, is a member of the collegial management of the ZAR.
Centre for Euro-Oriental Studies
The EZIRE cooperates with the Centre for Euro-Oriental Studies (CEOS), founded in June 2016. Founder members of CEOS are professors and research assistants of FAU, among them Prof. Dr. Mathias Rohe, Director of EZIRE, and Dr. Jörn Thielmann, Managing Director of EZIRE.
Cooperation with other universities
Academy for Islam in Research and Society - Goethe University Frankfurt/Main
The AIWG is a university platform working on research and transfer of islamic-theological questions in connection to the scientific field and society. It aims at the three goals of research, exchange and objectification of relevant question and thereby contributes to a leveled discussion of the topic.
Bavarian Orient Colloquium
The EZIRE participates in the organization of the Bavarian Orient Colloquium (BOK). The BOK is a joint lecture series of the universities Erlangen-Nuremberg and Bamberg. The speakers – many of them will be invited from abroad – report on orient specific topics. In the winter semester, the BOK takes place at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg, and is held during the summer semester at the University of Bamberg. The BOK is in existence since 1985 and has been funded by the Bavarian State Ministry of Sciences, Research and Arts since 1989.

Forum Islam and Middle East - University of Bern
The Forum Islam and Middle East (FINO) was established at the University of Bern in 2018 and sees itself as a transdisciplinary versteht sich als transdisziplinäres competence centre for the documentation, knowledge transfer and academic services in and around the realm of Islam and the Middle East.

Max-Planck-Institute for Social Anthropology - Department of Law and Anthropology
The Department of Law and Anthropology was added to the Max-Planck-Institut for Social Anthropology in March 2012. The EZIRE connects to the MPI not only through content work but also and especially because of the contact to Dr. Mahmoud Jaraba, who works there as a research assissant and is an associated member of EZIRE.
MIDA - Georg-August-University Göttingen
Thr DFG-project “Modern India in German Archives 1706-1989” of the Georg-August University Göttingen plans to uncover the rich archival collection about the German-Indian connections and to bring life to the therein slumbering scientific potential. Two EZIRE research assisstants, Ph.D. Gerdien Jonker and Dr. Razak Khan are part of the MIDA research team.
Swiss Centrum for Islam and Society - University of Freiburg
The SZIG promotes a scientific articulation of Islam in Swiss society on the one hand, and on the other hand, building on accumulated knowledge, it allows an academic discussion of relevant question from a Muslim perspective. The competence centre has been up and running since January 2015 und receives funding from the State Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation (SERI).

Department for the Study of Religions - University of Luzern
The Department for the Study of Religions is concerned with a wide range of religions, historically and contemporarily. It puts emphasis on islamic, hinduistic, buddhist and new religions. The EZIRE und the Department for the Study of Religions have worked together on numerous projects and are in close contact to start new ones.
