Dr. Mahmoud Jaraba, associated member at EZIRE, spent much of 2016 and 2017 doing field research in Salafist networks in Bavaria. The findings of his work have recently been published as “Salafism – the roots of Islamic extremism based on the Friday sermons of a Salafist mosque in Germany” (title translated from German).

Aside from historical developments and the establishment of Salafist networks in Bavaria, Mahmoud Jaraba shows the misuse of religious texts during the sermons by the extremists. The goal of this study is to understand in which ways the Salafists legitimize their ideology to, eventually, use this knowledge for targeted preventative or counteractive measures.

The study was published by utb.
