Personal details

Gerdien Jonker graduated in Religious Studies, Hebraic Studies and Ancient Oriental Studies from Amsterdam and Paris in 1993 with a dissertation on collective memory in Mesopotamia (The Topography of Remembrance. The Dead, Tradition and Collective Memory in Mesopotamia, Leiden: EJ Brill, 1995).

Numerous subsequent publications emerged in the framework of European research networks, including “Europe and the Mediterranean” (ESF), and “The Institutionalisation of Islam in Europe” (Fifth Framework). The associated research projects were carried out at the Centre for Modern Oriental Studies in Berlin, at the University of Marburg, at the Wilhelm-Friedrich University in Münster and at the Viadrina University in Frankfurt / Oder.

Since November 2011, Gerdien Jonker has been working as a research associate at the Erlangen Centre for Islam and Law in Europe at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg. In 2013 and 2016, the DFG honored two consecutive proposals on the exploration of the Ahmadiyya-Lahore in Europe. The resulting research was reflected in The Ahmadiyya Quest for Religious Progress.
